9:00 AM Keynote VIP Panel: The future of district cooling in Egypt

Are we getting there?

With 250,000 tonnes to 400,000 tonnes of district cooling requirements in Egypt for the next few years, this is rapidly changing the dynamics of the market. Explore the pivotal needs in establishing district cooling business models, the main drivers, the market growth and enormous potential for district cooling projects in Egypt.

Key points of discussion:
  • Get introduced to the new Egyptian DC code of 2019
  • How can investment be accelerated in low-carbon and climate-resilient district energy systems?
  • Tri-generation technologies: What are we waiting for?
  • Integrating urban systems with district cooling technologies
  • What are the key challenges in replacing HVAC with district cooling

Distinguished VIP Panellists:

3:00 PM VRF versus district cooling – what are you choosing?

As much as the world is moving towards district cooling and rightly so, can Egypt afford a 50% increase in using potable water? Also with the new cities coming in Egypt, the construction of villas has increased than high rises. Traditionally villas with VRF installed HVAC systems have generated lower energy than a community of villas with district cooling.

What should be the solution?
  • Choose it yourself: District cooling in villas versus variable refrigerant flow in villas
  • Water shortage: How can this be tackled?
  • Costs: With no electricity subsidies from 2020 and a 50% increase expected in water consumption, does moving to district cooling still help reduce energy bills?
  • How can solar energy contribute to energy savings?

Conference Day Two: Tuesday, 12 November 2019

1:30 PM Open discussion with the audience: An introduction to Egypt Green Building Council’s efforts in the area of energy efficiency

For the past two decades, the Egyptian government has worked feverishly to improve building energy efficiency and address green house gas emissions.
The motivation for this effort has been the realisation that population momentum would ultimately place enormous demands on all sectors of the Egyptian state and that these demands would have the potential to dramatically limit long-term growth of the Egyptian economy. At the time, detailed studies had shown the close link between population growth and energy.

The big questions are:
  • Do we have sufficient methods to reduce power consumption and GHG emissions?
  • What are the alternative paths of achieving energy efficiency?
  • Enforcement versus empowering the industry
